In China there are about 1.4 billion people. In the cities most people live very close to each other in high rise buildings. About 55% of the population live in cities.
Life in the countryside is very simple. Usually people cook over an open fire and don't have any electricity or running water in every house.
A lot of the Chinese kids go to school for five or six years. In the cities, and if you have money in the family, you can continue going to school even after this. The schools are quite traditional, and you need to learn stuff by heart and prove what you know in tests. In the countryside, a larger part of the population are illiterate (analfabeter) than in the cities. This is also true for the older people, compared to the younger. In 2009, an estimated 85 million people were illiterate. In this, and many other respects, China is a third world country.
The average life span of Chinese women is 78 years, and for men 73.
When the Chinese government realised that there were going to be too many people in the country, they decided that every husband and wife could have only one child (the so called one child policy). As a consequence of this, a lot of families only wanted boys, as it's the son that takes care of his parents when they get old. The daughter often moves to her husband's family and takes care of his parents together with him. No, there are too many boys and too few girls in China, and the government has allowed people to have two children instead of one.

Facts about China
China is one of the most populated countries on earth. Approximately 1.4 billion (1 380 million) people live in China (including Hongkong, which has a certain amount of independency towards China).
China is a large country, in the east of Asia. Its' capital i Beijing (which means the north capital). Beijing is one of the largest cities in China, with around 8 million inhabitants). Beijing is famous for the forbidden city, where the emperors of China used to live and where no ordinary people were allowed. It's also close to the Great Wall of China, which is an old wall reaching across 2400 km of the north and east. The building of the wall was started in 214 B.C, to protect the country from enemies.

Shanghai is an important city for finance and export. A lote of international companies have offices here, and factories in the nearby provinces. Shanghai is a so called megacity, with an official population of 24 million, but probably around 30 million people live there.

China has borders to 14 countries, and has issues regarding that in Taiwan (which is in China considered a part of China, but in the taiwanese people think of themselves as independent), and Tibet.
China has a lot of large rivers; one of them is the famous Yangtzekiang and it's also the longest one. It starts in the west, in Tibet and runs to the sea in the east, around Shanghai. The river has been important for providing shipping possibilities and helping fertilize the areas around them through flooding (just like the river Nile in Egypt).

China is a republic, and that means it has a president and a prime minister. The president now is Xi Jinping, and the head of the government is Li Keqiang. China's president is not elected democratically. It's the Communist party that decides who becomes president. In China people cannot say or write whatever they want, or critisize the government, as in democracies. China is considered a dictatorship.
The flag of China is from 1949:

China is a vast country and lies in several climate zones; the nort of the country is cold in the winter and warm in the summer, especially the inland, and the south is subtropical and humid and hot in the summer but a bit cooler in the winter,
If you look at the map of China you can see mountains in the north and west, and agricultural land in the central parts. There is a lot of dry land and a desert called Gobi as well (in the north, a part of Mongolia too).
